How to Reduce Soil Acidification
Applying lime is the only reliable and cost-effective way to reduce soil acidity (increase soil pH).
The average lime requirement of 2 to 3 tonnes per hectare (800kg-1200kg per acre) will raise the pH value in the soil from 5.5 to 6.5 in sandy loam soils. Additional levels of application would be required for heavier soils.
Benefits:
- Reduce available aluminium
- Increase Calcium, Phosphorus and Molybdenum availability
- Provide a more favourable environment for soil microbes
- Improve the nutrient cycle by earthworms and soil bacteria
- Helps reduce other forms of land degradation (e.g. salinity, erosion)
- Increase pasture and/or cropping options so more sensitive valuable species can be grown.
The effect of lime application lasts for years and not only increases the supply of calcium, which is an essential element often lacking in high rainfall areas.
