Increase Profitability
By simply knowing what the soil and crop or pasture needs, you can increase paddock productivity and profitability on three (3) fronts…..
- The soil test tells us what needs to be done to improve soil fertility and paddock performance; e.g. the proper liming and fertiliser products to use, and the correct application rates. This includes integration of essential trace elements with a foliar fertiliser. What the neighbour does is often not necessarily what you need to do! So, in many cases the correct selection and correct rates will otherwise eliminate costly wastage, while also increase the productivity and quality. For optimum return, this process can include assistance with the correct selection of seed mixes that are best suited to the soil, environmental condition and farming enterprise objectives.
- By getting the product selection and rates right, productivity should increase and this provides a higher return on the inputs investment. Often overlooked is; “..the cheapest hay is what you grow..”. Consider a hay paddock that yields a further (e.g.) 2 x 400kg round bales of hay per hectare than usual/average. If you weren’t growing it and you needed it to feed your stock, and if the going price to buy hay was (say) $150 per tonne, the ‘replacement value’ of the ‘extra’ yield you have grown is around $120 per hectare. That obviously improves profitability through expenditure savings.
- Further, by getting the products selection and rates right, the quality of feed/hay is also expected to increase and this will translate to improved animal production. (e.g. Meat, wool, milk, etc) “They are what they eat”. Animal production improvements can include; increased birthing rates, reduced mortality rates, faster weight gain, reduced need for supplements, increased stocking rates, increased milk production, etc. All add $’s straight to the bottom line.
There is just so much to lose if don’t make decisions based on what the soil and crop or pasture need to improve performance and returns!
